New challenges

You might be surprised to learn that I will no longer contest the World Cup for Cross Country Rallies with Mitsubishi. Please let me briefly give you the answers to the most important questions.

Why?

After three and a half years of co-operation and many successes with Mitsubishi since the inception of the programm in autumn 1998, it is time now to move on and look for new challenges. I am extremely motivated for new tasks that are still to be defined.

Why now?

In March, the new season of the World Cup for Cross Country Rallies kicks off, starting with the Italian Baja. The contract between Mitsubishi and me expired according to plan after the 2002 Arras Dakar Rally.

Plans for future projects?

The break I have decided to take will last until a new interesting task has been defined together with my management. My target is to remain in motorsport - in fact, to remain in the cockpit. This does include other kinds of motorsport, too.

Looking back

I associate the best memories of my career doubtlessly with Mitsubishi. In the past two seasons, we have been fighting for the World Cup title until the final round. I finished both seasons as the best T2 driver and as runner-up in the overall standings. Since 1998, we’ve got twelve podium finishes in Cross Country Rallies under our belts. The pinnacle were the two consecutive victories in the 2001 Dakar Rally and the 2001 Italian Baja, of course. Not to forget the manufacturers titles Mitsubishi won in the past years. This was simply a fantastic era. I would like to thank Mitsubishi, Andreas Schulz, the team of Dominique Serieys and all our partners in motorsport for all the support.
